Virtual Village 2020 program details for campers

With the difficult decision behind us to not run our traditional in-person summer camp programs, we are very excited to announce the details for our new online virtual camp program. While we know that it won’t be the same this summer, we have been hard at work developing plans for how we can bring some of the magic of what we do at Brigadoon to you in your homes.

It won’t be camp as you have known it, but we are still a strong and connected community that we feel very grateful to be a part of. Brigadoon has always been about more than boating and archery and there’s a reason that our name is Brigadoon Village. This year, our Village goes Virtual!

What your Virtual Village week will look like:

  • Just like our typical summers, our campers will have one week of the summer where they spend the most time engaging in our programs.
  • These programs will run from Monday to Thursday during the camper’s Village week. Each day, campers will join us for a portion of the morning and afternoon to participate in fun programs and cabin time!
  • We’ll be working hard to incorporate some of the traditions and silly things that make Brigadoon Village special to our campers.

Morning Broadcast: Each day at our Virtual Village brings campers together to participate in engaging and fun activities. Campers will begin their day with a broadcast featuring important updates, fun challenges and games, songs, opportunities to win some points for their Briga-Battle teams, and even a chance for our Wheel of Misfortune to make an appearance if our staff aren’t quite careful enough!

Daily Program: Each day we’ll have an age-appropriate program for our campers to participate in along with their cabin group. These may be similar to the programs they would have seen at Brigadoon previously, and in some cases, maybe entirely different!

Cabin Group Time: Just like at camp, we’ll sort campers by age and similar conditions to create virtual cabin groups (with zoommates! Ha!). Cabin Time will be a special time for campers to connect in these small groups with staff leading different daily activities to promote fun and connection.

What’s a week at Brigadoon without a campfire or talent show!? Yeah, we thought the same thing! Your camper’s Village Week will also include a virtual talent show and closing campfire towards the end of the week.

Prior to the beginning of each camper’s Virtual Village week, they will receive a box in the mail from Brigadoon! This will include some basic program supplies required to participate in the programs planned for the week, as well as a little bit of camp magic!

Extra fun stuff

Happening outside of your Village Week:

Pursuits: A Pursuit is a specialized program that allows campers to participate in daily programming in a topic of their interest. During the registration process, you’ll have an opportunity to choose which pursuit programs most interest your camper. These Pursuit programs will take place outside of camper’s Village Week. Our Pursuit Weeks will be the last three weeks of August. Once registration has closed, we’ll put the puzzle together and confirm for you which pursuit program they will be in and during which week it will run!

Just like at camp, campers will come at the same time every day and learn about a specific topic area, building on the skills they learned the day before. These programs will be open to all campers from across our camp sessions and will be a great opportunity to get involved outside of their Village Week while meeting new campers!

Drop-In Special Programs: On Sunday evenings throughout the summer (stay tuned for a specific schedule of which Sundays!) we’ll offer a special program that will be open to all of our campers. Not only that, but we’ll open it up to other people, too! Campers can bring their sibling, their parents/guardians, or their best friend. Anyone who would like to see a bit more of what Brigadoon is all about! These programs might be a counsellor competition, a campfire, etc.

For our teen campers

Drop-In Teen Programs: We’ll offer programs specifically for our teen campers over the course of the summer. These will be drop-in and will be a wide range of programs to engage the diverse interests of our teen campers! After registration, we’ll keep you posted on what’s planned and when it will happen!

Virtual Leadership Program: We are still running our Summer Leadership Program! Of course, it will look a bit different than in the previous couple of years, but we will still be teaching our campers skills in mentorship, group leadership, and role modelling. This program is open to campers aged 15+ and will include a training week which will take place during the week of July 6th-10thCampers will then come back for their Village week, where they will have further opportunities to practice their leadership skills with our younger campers!

Our (tentative) schedule:

We have put together a suggested schedule for our weeks of camp, but will be able to confirm dates after registration has closed and we see what our camper numbers will be! The schedule, including the groups of campers who are welcome to attend each session is as follows:

*If you have applied for Summer 2020 previously, we will need you to register again. However, the process will be shortened significantly, you will only need to answer questions which are new or which ask for updates from the last time you registered with us!

We are still, as always, operating on a pay-what-you-can fee structure. The cost of Virtual Village will be significantly reduced compared to a week of camp. Simply select the amount you feel your family is able to contribute to the Virtual Village program.

After registration has closed, we will be in touch to confirm the details of your camper’s registration, including dates, schedules, and links to follow!

Still unsure? If you or your camper are unsure about whether Virtual Village will be a good fit for them, feel free to get in touch with us to discuss! We know that this format won’t work for everyone, but would encourage all of our campers who feel able to give it a try! Some Brigadoon in a summer is better than no Brigadoon in a summer, as far as we’re concerned! We are excited to get to spend this time with you during Summer 2020!
